HSK Levels Explained (1-9) — Complete 2026 Guide

Published July 2026 · 6 min read

The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, 汉语水平考试) is the official standardized test for Mandarin Chinese proficiency. In 2024, it underwent its biggest reform ever — expanding from 6 levels to 9 levels. Here's everything you need to know about the new system.

The Big Change: HSK 1-6 → HSK 1-9

The old HSK (2010-2024) had 6 levels. The problem: HSK 6 didn't mean fluent. You could pass HSK 6 and still struggle to read a newspaper. The new system adds levels 7-9 to bridge the gap to true advanced proficiency, aligning with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and China's Chinese Proficiency Standards.

Note: Vocabulary counts for HSK 7-9 are estimates based on the new standards. Official word lists are still being finalized.

What Each Level Tests

The new HSK tests four skills separately: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. (The old HSK had a separate HSKK oral test.) This means you can be HSK 4 in listening but HSK 3 in writing — a more accurate picture of your real ability.

Listening

At lower levels: short dialogues and announcements. At higher levels: lectures, debates, news broadcasts. Tones are tested at every level — this is where dedicated ear training pays off.

Reading

From simple sentences (HSK 1) to classical Chinese excerpts (HSK 9). Character recognition is the biggest bottleneck for most learners.

Writing

New to the reformed HSK: a dedicated writing section from HSK 3 onward. At higher levels, you'll write essays by hand or type in Chinese.

Speaking

Integrated into the main test, not a separate exam. Includes reading aloud, answering questions, and (at higher levels) giving opinions on abstract topics. Tone accuracy is a significant part of your speaking score.
